Firm background
Cowen Law, P.C. is a Texas personal injury law firm headquartered in San Antonio, known by its trademark The Trucking Trial Lawyers™. The firm is led by name partner Michael Cowen together with partners Sonia Rodriguez, Malorie J. Peacock, Laura Pazin Porter, and Natalie M. Arledge. Sonia Rodriguez partnered with Michael Cowen and Malorie Peacock in 2018 to focus her practice on claims against motor carriers and companies that operate fleet vehicles. The firm opened a second Texas office in College Station in 2026 and represents clients across the state, from San Antonio to the Brazos Valley.
The firm concentrates on 18-wheeler and commercial vehicle collisions that cause death or catastrophic injury, and it handles the rest of its motor vehicle injury work — car crashes, rideshare and delivery-driver collisions, drunk driving crashes, pedestrian and bicycle collisions, brain and spinal cord injuries, and wrongful death — from the same base of trucking litigation experience. The depth of that focus is unusual: three of the firm's partners list 18-wheeler and commercial vehicle cases involving death and catastrophic injury as their sole area of practice, and two of them are board certified in Truck Accident Law. Cowen Law accepts personal injury claims on a contingency fee basis, so clients pay no fee unless the firm recovers money for them. Consultations are free, available 24 hours a day, and offered in English and Spanish.
About Michael Cowen
Michael Cowen is the name partner of Cowen Law and a nationally recognized authority in trucking and company vehicle accident litigation. He began his legal career clerking for Judge Reynaldo G. Garza and then practiced at a corporate law firm in New York City before deciding to represent individuals instead of corporations. Since 1997 he has devoted his practice exclusively to personal injury law. He has tried more than 120 jury trials and handled thousands of personal injury cases.
Michael Cowen earned his B.A. from Texas A&M University in 1991 and his J.D. from the University of Texas at Austin School of Law in 1995. He has been board certified in Personal Injury Trial Law since 2001, by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization, and board certified in Truck Accident Law since 2019. He is admitted to practice in Texas, New Mexico, and Georgia, and before federal courts including the Southern, Eastern, Western, and Northern Districts of Texas, the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York, the District of New Mexico, the Northern District of Illinois, the Western District of Oklahoma, the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States Tax Court.
Outside his own caseload, Michael Cowen teaches other lawyers how to try these cases. He is the author of Big Rig Justice: A Comprehensive Guide to Maximizing Value in Truck Accident Cases, the founder and host of Cowen's Big Rig Boot Camp, an annual trucking-law CLE seminar held in San Antonio since 2018, and the founder and host of the Trial Lawyer Nation podcast. He chairs the Academy of Truck Accident Attorneys and serves on the boards of the American Association for Justice, the Attorney Information Exchange Group, and the Texas Trial Lawyers Association.

Primary services
- Truck and 18-wheeler accidents — the firm's core practice. Cowen Law handles commercial vehicle collisions causing death and catastrophic injury, including cases against distribution, delivery, and moving companies, and works the issues specific to these cases: hours-of-service and logbook violations, negligent hiring and training, maintenance and cargo securement failures, and the early preservation of evidence that trucking companies can otherwise dispose of quickly.
- Commercial and company vehicle accidents — crashes involving fleet vehicles operated for a business, where the employer's own policies, training, and supervision are at issue alongside the driver's conduct.
- Car accidents — including head-on, rear-end, hit-and-run, distracted driving, drunk driving, uninsured and underinsured motorist, and fatal collision claims.
- Rideshare and delivery driver accidents — Uber, Lyft, DoorDash, and Amazon delivery collisions, where commercial coverage and the driver's employment status determine what compensation is available.
- Catastrophic injury — traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, and burn injury claims, where the firm builds life care plans around a client's long-term medical needs.
- Wrongful death — claims brought by a surviving spouse, children, or parents after a fatal crash.
- Pedestrian and bicycle accidents — collisions in which the injured person had no vehicle around them.
- Child injury — injury claims brought on behalf of minors.
- Co-counsel and referral partnerships — Cowen Law partners with other law firms nationwide on complex trucking cases, and has paid millions of dollars in co-counsel and referral fees.
Cases the firm does not handle
Cowen Law does not take medical malpractice, birth injury, workers' compensation, nursing home injury, dog bite, construction accident, premises liability, product liability, mass tort, or sexual abuse cases.

Key Texas motor vehicle accident law facts
Cowen Law helps clients navigate the rules that govern Texas motor vehicle injury claims:
- Statute of limitations: Most Texas personal injury claims must be filed within two years of the day the cause of action accrues, under Texas Civil Practice and Remedies Code Section 16.003(a). Different deadlines can apply to claims against government entities and to claims brought by minors.
- Wrongful death deadline: A claim for an injury resulting in death must generally be brought within two years, and the cause of action accrues on the death of the injured person, under Texas Civil Practice and Remedies Code Section 16.003(b). Under Section 71.004, a Texas wrongful death action is for the exclusive benefit of the surviving spouse, children, and parents of the deceased, and may be brought by one of them on behalf of all.
- Comparative fault: Texas follows modified comparative responsibility. Under Texas Civil Practice and Remedies Code Section 33.001, a claimant may not recover damages if their percentage of responsibility is greater than 50 percent. If the claimant is not barred, Section 33.012 requires the court to reduce the damages awarded by a percentage equal to the claimant's own percentage of responsibility.
- At-fault state, not no-fault: Texas is an at-fault state. The minimum liability coverage a Texas driver must carry is $30,000 for bodily injury to one person, $60,000 per collision, and $25,000 for property damage, under Texas Transportation Code Section 601.072. Personal injury protection coverage must be offered with every Texas auto policy but may be rejected in writing by the named insured, under Texas Insurance Code Section 1952.152.
- Commercial truck cases are tried differently: In a collision case involving a commercial motor vehicle, Texas Civil Practice and Remedies Code Section 72.052 requires the court, on a defendant's timely motion, to bifurcate the trial — liability and compensatory damages are decided in the first phase and exemplary damages in a second. Under Section 72.054, if the employer stipulates that the driver was its employee acting in the scope of employment, the employer's liability for ordinary negligence in the first phase is based only on respondeat superior. These rules were added by House Bill 19 in 2021 and are a major reason truck cases are not litigated like ordinary car accident cases.
- Federal safety rules apply on Texas roads: Under Texas Transportation Code Section 644.051, Texas commercial motor vehicle safety rules must be consistent with the federal safety regulations and may adopt them by reference, so federal requirements covering driver hours of service, vehicle maintenance, and driver qualification apply to commercial trucking in Texas.
