Call the police It is important that you call the police and get a police report made if you are in a car wreck. Even if the other driver admits fault and provides you with insurance information it is important that you call the police. We have seen many cases where other driver admitted fault at the scene, but later changed his story or gave a fake name, address, or insurance information. Get the other driver's information Before you leave the scene of the wreck, try to get the name, address, telephone number, and insurance information from the other driver. It can take up to ten days for the police to issue a report, and if you don't get this information at the scene, it may delay the process of getting your car fixed. Get witness information If there are any witnesses, be sure to write down their names, addresses, and telephone numbers. Police reports often fail to note this important information, making it impossible to find witnesses if you don't write it down yourself. Take photos If you have a camera, you should take photos of your car, the other car, and the scene of the wreck. If there are skid marks or other marks on the road, you should document those as well. Get Medical Attention If you are hurt, you need to get medical attention. If you think you need to go to the hospital, the police officer will offer you an ambulance. If you are hurt, but do not believe that it is a life-threatening emergency, then try to see your family doctor or another physician on the same day. It is also important to tell the doctor everything that is wrong with you, and if you have had any prior accidents or injuries, you need to tell your doctor about those too. Don't talk to the insurance company You should not talk to any insurance adjusters without first getting advice from an attorney specializing in car wreck cases. Remember, the insurance adjustor is not your friend; his or her only job is to pay you as little money as possible. An insurance adjustor may try to trick you into saying something that may hurt you later, or into signing a document that takes away your rights.
