The following car crash statistics come from the Texas Department of Transportation. These statistics are for the year 2008; more recent statistics are not yet available.

All Crashes:
• Number of traffic accidents: 437,452
• Number of persons injured in traffic accidents: 242,698
• Number of crashes leading to serious injury: 61,954
• Number of people seriously injured in Texas car crashes: 84,508
• Number of traffic deaths: 3,468
• Average crashes per day: 1,198
• Average crashes per month: 236,454
• One reportable crash occurred every 72 second

Types of vehicles involved in Texas traffic accidents:
• Passenger cars: 384,345
• Trucks of all types: 410,749
• Tractor-trailers: 39,559
• Bus: 3,310
• Motorcycles: 10,639

Fatal Crashes:
• Number of fatal collisions: 3,109
• Number of highway fatalities: 3,468
• One person was killed every two hours
• There were no days without traffic deaths.
• In Texas, there were 1.41 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles travelled. The U.S rate for 2007 was 1.28 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles.

Traffic Accident injuries:
• Number of injury producing crashes: 159,139
• Number of individuals injured: 242,698
• Number of serious injuries: 84,508
• Number of non-serious injuries: 158,190

Leading contributing factors to Texas traffic accidents:
1. Faulty evasive action (28,409)
2. Failure to yield row – turning left (28,194)
3. Following too closely (27,474)
4. Speeding (25,962)
5. Under the influence of alcohol, drugs or medication (19,615)

Leading contributing factors to fatal crashes in Texas:
1. Speeding (823)
2. Under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or medication (712)
3. Faulty evasive action (408)
4. Driver had been drinking (232)
5. Driver fatigued or asleep (199)

Alcohol-related crashes:
• Number of alcohol-related crashes: 28,373
• Number of DWI crashes (BAC over 0.8): 16,163
• Number of fatal alcohol-related crashes: 877
• Number of alcohol-related injuries: 18,177
• Number of alcohol-related deaths: 975
• Almost one-third of alcohol-related crashes involved a driver under 25.
• 14.3% of impaired drivers were under 21.
• Texas leads the nation in DWI crashes.
