Yes. Motorcyclists in Texas are required to carry motorcycle insurance. Motorcyclists must carry the same insurance coverage as drivers of other motor vehicles. Operating a motorcycle on public roads without insurance is against the law and is punishable with fines not to exceed $350. Repeated convictions may result in additional fines and suspension of the motorcyclist’s license.
In Texas, motorcycle insurance must meet the following minimum requirements:
Liability Coverage
This coverage covers other people’s expenses for accidents caused by you and other drivers under your policy, up to your policy’s dollar limits. These expenses can include:
• Medical and funeral costs, lost wages, and compensation for pain and suffering
• Car repair or replacement costs; reimbursement for other property damage
• Auto rental while the other driver’s car is repaired
• Any punitive damages awarded by a court
• Your attorney fees if someone sues you because of the accident and your bail up to $250 if you are arrested
Texas requires the following liability coverage:
• Bodily injury liability maximum for one person injured in an accident: $25,000
• Bodily injury liability maximum for all injuries in one accident: $50,000
• Property-damage liability maximum for one accident: $10,000
On January 1, 2011 these limits will increase to $30,000/$60,000/$25,000.
Optional coverage:
Uninsured/Underinsured Insurance Coverage (UM/UIM)
This coverage is not mandatory in Texas, but it is a good idea. UM/UIM coverage will pay your expenses from an accident caused by an uninsured motorist or a motorist without enough insurance to cover your bills, up to your insurance policy’s dollar limits. This coverage also pays for accidents caused by a hit-and-run driver if the accident is promptly reported to the police.
Medical Payments Coverage and Personal Injury Protection or No-Fault Insurance
This insurance covers your own medical and funeral bills and property damage resulting from accidents, including those in which the other person is a pedestrian or bicyclist. It pays 80% of your lost income and the cost of a caregiver if the injured person needs home-based care.
In Texas, personal injury protection (PIP or no-fault) is not required.
If you are involved in a Texas motorcycle wreck and have no proof of insurance coverage, your license can be suspended. You will need to pay a fine and show proof of insurance before your motorcycle license can be reinstated.
