Texas leads the nation in DWI accidents.

Texas is now the nation’s leader with the most alcohol related motor vehicle fatalities and the highest number of fatalities with drivers with blood alcohol concentrations over the .08% limit.

In 2008, 11,733 Americans lost their lives in car crashes that involved an alcohol-impaired driver; 1,463 of these fatalities occurred in Texas alcohol-related crashes. That means Texas had more than 12% of the nation’s drunk driving fatalities.

In Texas, 43% of all vehicle fatalities involved alcohol. If 1,463 deaths are averaged over a year, it means that every day there are about 5 alcohol related deaths on Texas roads. Sixty-five percent of these fatalities involved drivers with blood alcohol concentrations over .15%. Most of these drivers were repeat DWI offenders.

Many of these deaths were of young people under 21. In 2008, 187 people under 21 died in alcohol-related car crashes. Sometimes, they were the drivers. In Texas, almost one quarter of high school seniors have admitted to driving a car after several drinks. That puts about 80,000 drunk drivers with little driving experience on our roadways.

The group most likely to be involved in alcohol-related accidents includes people age 21-24. Nationwide, more than one-third of drivers with blood alcohol concentrations (BAC) of 0.08% or greater who were involved in fatal car crashes were between the ages of 21 and 24. Almost as many drivers were between the ages of 25 and 34.

Drugs other than alcohol are involved in about 18% of motor vehicle driver deaths. Often these drugs are combined with alcohol.

It always saddens us when we hear about a young person whose life was ended in an alcohol-related crash. Each of these fatalities is a death that could have been prevented if the driver was not driving while under the influence. Even the most careful driver cannot protect himself against drunk driving.

If you were hurt on a car accident caused by a drunk driver, or if you have lost a loved one in an alcohol-related crash, you almost certainly have a lot on your mind. You don’t have time to deal with insurance companies. Unfortunately, although you have a strong case for collecting damages, many victims of DWI accidents do not get the compensation that they are entitled to.

Contact the car crash attorneys at the Cowen Law Group. We can’t undo what happened, but our lawyers can deal with the insurance companies on your behalf and get you fair compensation for medical and burial costs, rehabilitation, pain and suffering, lost income and other damages.
