A South Texas Motorcyclist’s Guide to Motorcycle Safety Gear

Most motorcycle-car accidents occur when a car driver doesn’t see the motorcyclist. A motorcyclist can reduce his or her chances of injury by following the rules of the road, staying visible and wearing motorcycle safety gear.

You can’t do anything about distracted or drunk drivers, but you can reduce your chance of injury by wearing gear that protects your head and body.

Here is an overview of motorcycle safety gear:

Helmets

Head injury is the leading cause of death and disability from motorcycle accidents. Helmets are the best way to prevent serious head injury. You can learn more about choosing a helmet in our article “The South Texas Biker’s Guide to Choosing a Motorcycle Helmet.”

Eye Protection

Eye protection helps you see what’s going on around you when you are riding a motorcycle. Without eye protection, debris and bugs will fly into your eyes and your eyes will tear from the wind. If you choose a helmet with a visor, you have built-in eye protection. Some riders prefer tinted goggles that they can use as sunglasses and remove at night.

Ear Protection

Wind noise on a motorcycle can become extreme at highway speeds. With repeated exposure, your hearing can suffer. Ear plugs can help protect your hearing.

Jackets

Jackets offer upper body protection. In a crash they can reduce or prevent abrasion injuries and road rash. A crash scene can be filled with torn metal and shattered glass, leather jackets also protect the body from cuts.

Pants

Pants offer the same protection from abrasion, road rash, and debris for the lower body.

Gloves

When one falls, it is human reflex to break the fall by extending the arms. So hands can be seriously injured if a rider is thrown off his or her motorcycle. Sturdily constructed, well-padded, gauntlet-style gloves protect your palms, knuckles, and fingers from cuts and abrasion injury.

Boots

Like hands, feet need to be protected. Boots keep your feet firmly planted on the pegs and protect your shins from road debris and flying pebbles.

Elbow, Shin, and Knee Guards

There guards are often used for riding off road, but guards can be used to protect elbows, shins, and knees from impact in combination with less protective outer layers. However, they are not as effective as full gear.
