Equipment Malfunction Causes San Antonio Truck Fire, Closes U.S. 181

A tanker truck hauling fuel caught on fire at about 5:30 a.m. on Monday, November 1 on U.S. 181 east of Loop 1604 between the Bexar and Wilson county lines.  The San Antonio commercial truck accident is being blamed on an equipment malfunction. Fortunately, no one was injured.

The driver of the truck attempted to put out the blaze with a fire extinguisher, but he was not successful.  It took firefighters from Harmony Volunteer Fire Department and Wilson County several hours to put out the fire.  U.S. 181 was closed during that time.

In Texas, tanker trucks often  haul flammable cargo such as oil or fuel.  Like any commercial truck, these heavy vehicles can cause serious damage in a crash.  But, there is an additional risk of deadly fires.  Last Saturday, a truck driver died in a Texas tanker truck accident when a big rig carrying gasoline caught fire after overturning on U.S. 183 in Austin.

It is critical that all large trucks be maintained in safe working condition, and this is especially true for tanker trucks.  Trucking companies and drivers are responsible for ensuring the safety of their equipment and performing the maintenance necessary to keep the truck in working condition.  Failing to do so may lead to serious personal injury and wrongful death.
